The Neranleigh_Fernvale Beds are metasedimentry sequence, described as mudstone, shale, arenite, chert, jasper, basic metavolcanics, pillow lava and conglomerate.

Basically it is a large and veried sequence of generally fine-grained, metamorphosed sedimentary and extrusive volcanic rocks. They represent the older basement rocks of the New England Fold Bet that have been moderately to strongly deformed and uplifted to form the hilly terrain of the region.
